Micron plans to launch GDDR7 memory in early 2024

Micron has confirmed that it will introduce its next-generation GDDR7 graphics memory on its 1X nm node early next year. During Micron's fiscal Q3 2023 earnings call, the company's CEO mentioned the upcoming GDDR7 memory but did not provide specific details regarding potential speeds.

Currently, GDDR6 memory is shipping with speeds up to 20 Gbps, such as in the Radeon RX 7900 series, while Micron's GDDR6X technology, found in NVIDIA's RTX 40 series, reaches speeds of up to 22.4 Gbps on the RTX 4080. GDDR7 memory will certainly be faster than that. The question is how fast?

As you might expect, the first iterations of the new GDDR memory won't be as fast as the ones that come after. For example, the first GDDR6 memory iterations used on GPUs were clocked at 14 Gbps, but Samsung now has GDDR6 memory that can go up to 24 Gbps. With GDDR7, something similar is likely to happen here with GDDR7.

Due to the incredibly high speeds, GPU manufacturers will have the chance to use narrower memory buses while offering comparable memory bandwidth. Moreover, the early 2024 timeframe for the release suggests we might see the first GDDR7 products come out later in that same year.
