EA’s Iron Man game might be using Unreal Engine instead of Frostbite

For many years EA required its development studios to create their games using the publisher’s proprietary game engine known as Frostbite. While an impressive engine in some respects, its cross-genre compatibility left a lot to be desired. Fortunately the publisher has loosened up when it comes to using Frostbite – with EA Motive’s Iron Man game possibly set to use Epic’s Unreal Engine.

As reported by Malik Usman via Emopulse, a new job listing posted by EA Motive seems to suggest that the studio’s upcoming Iron Man game will use Epic Games’ Unreal Engine instead of EA’s Frostbite. The position is for a Senior Level Designer and as part of the job requirement it requests that applicants have “familiarity with advanced game engine (sic) like Unreal.”

This might be suggesting that the Iron Man game could be using Unreal Engine – a first for the studio whose upcoming Dead Space remake utilises the aforementioned Frostbite. Of course, it is worth noting that Frostbite is a proprietary engine, and so the job listing could be taking that into account when hiring externally (hence asking for Unreal Engine experience instead).

Regardless of what engine it uses, it will be interesting to see how the Iron Man game looks and feels when it is officially shown off at some point in the future. We will simply have to wait and see.
