WhatsApp is down worldwide

Last year, Meta suffered a major outage that took down most of its services, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Oculus. Today, Meta seems to be having issues again, with WhatsApp going down and impacting users across the globe.

As of 8 AM this morning, WhatsApp has been down, giving thousands of users a ‘connecting' message. A quick look at Down Detector shows that around 100,000 users have reported the outage already.

So far, Meta has not publicly commented on the outage through any of its social channels, including the WhatsApp Twitter page. Last year's outage across services came down to a router configuration change, but with the outage only affecting WhatsApp this time around, we are unsure what the root cause is. Typically, WhatsApp is a stable service that rarely suffers outages, so this incident is noteworthy.

We will update this post once Meta issues comment, and once the issue has been fixed. Update: WhatsApp is now back online following an outage this morning. Meta acknowledged the issue in a statement but did not share the cause for the outage.
