Bethesda puts The Elder Scrolls: Legends development on hold

The success of Hearthstone spurred along a big card-game resurgence on PC and mobile, with many developers creating CCG spin-offs for various IP. Bethesda is one of the biggest examples, with The Elder Scrolls: Legends hitting the market three years ago and even undergoing a massive overhaul this year. Despite all of that, the game doesn’t appear to be doing particularly well, with development now officially ‘on hold’.

Last night in a Reddit update, Bethesda announced that while The Elder Scrolls: Legends will remain live and playable, new expansions and other future content are “no longer under active development”. Going forward, Legends updates will purely be based around bug fixes to keep the game running.

This news comes just shortly after the game’s overhaul, which began rolling out in March this year. Originally, The Elder Scrolls: Legends was handled by Dire Wolf but due to various behind-the-scenes issues, Bethesda moved the game over to a new studio, Sparkypants, which redesigned the UI and took over development duties.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to really save the game. CD Projekt Red has also faced similar issues with GWENT, which has now been scrapped for consoles and will instead only receive future updates on PC/mobile. As a thank you to players, Bethesda will be awarding Legends players with ‘The Tamriel Collection’, a new assortment of cards, the next time they log in to the game.

KitGuru Says: I actually really enjoyed The Elder Scrolls Legends and still play from time to time, so this news is disappointing. Still, trying to dethrone Hearthstone was always going to be a lofty task. Did many of you ever give The Elder Scrolls: Legends a try? How do you feel about the game being put ‘on hold’?
