Sony has surpassed 2 million PS5s sold in Japan

The PS5 has been a fast seller ever since its launch. Even now, almost two years later, the console is still difficult to pick up at retail and requires some planning on the customer's part. With the console selling out as fast as they can be made, we've seen Sony hit a number of sales milestones, and it just reached its latest, with the PS5 surpassing 2 million units sold in Japan.

According to sales data published by Famitsu, the PS5 has sold 2,027,783 units in Japan, with roughly 1.7 million of that being the standard console with the disc drive, and the remainder being Digital Edition sales.

Previous generations of PlayStation consoles, including the PS4 and PS3 did hit this milestone in Japan quicker. However, due to supply chain constraints, Sony has not been able to produce enough consoles to meet demand, which has slowed down potential growth.

Sony is in a good position to sell PS5s over the holiday season, as God of War: Ragnarok is launching in November. Next year, Sony will have more major exclusives on the way, including Final Fantasy 16 and Insomniac's Spider-Man 2.

KitGuru Says: If there were no supply chain constraints, the PS5 likely would have reached this milestone earlier this year.
