Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign expansion reportedly developed by Sledgehammer

Last month, sources claimed that Infinity Ward is planning a massive expansion for Modern Warfare II sometime after launch. We heard this would include many classic Call of Duty maps for multiplayer and new campaign content. According to an updated report, the new campaign content will be developed by Sledgehammer Games.

According to Jason Schreier, who has previously reported other details on the upcoming expansion, Sledgehammer Games is working on the campaign portion of the expansion. Sledgehammer Games also offered support work on Black Ops: Cold War, and headed development on Vanguard, WWII and Advanced Warfare.

Call of Duty used to sell map packs back in the day, but more recently, maps have traditionally been offered for free so as not to splinter the player base. This Modern Warfare II expansion is being referred to as a “full premium release” by Activision executives in an earnings call, giving Treyarch the extra time it needs to finish work on its next mainline Call of Duty title, due out in 2024.

This would be the first time we've ever seen a Call of Duty campaign expansion post-launch. Previously, all post-launch efforts have focused on multiplayer and co-op modes, like Zombies, traditional multiplayer and more recently, Warzone.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
