PS5 software update officially released with 1440p support and more

Back in July Sony released a new beta version of the PlayStation 5’s system software, bringing with it some much needed features including folder-like game lists; improved social features and much more. By far the biggest addition came in the form of 1440p support. After months of beta testing, the official release is now live, allowing any and all PS5 players to benefit from this latest software update.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Hideaki Nishino, the Senior Vice President for Platform Experience at PlayStation unveiled the full list of new features available with this update, saying “Thanks to the support and feedback from our PS5 beta participants, today we’re rolling out a new system software update to PS5 players globally”. With that, the full list of changes and additions is as follows:

  • 1440p HDMI video output
  • In your Game Library you can now create gamelists, which make organising your games even easier.
  • You now have the ability to request a Share Screen from a fellow party member
  • You can now easily view new friends’ profiles
  • Receive a notification to help you join a friend’s game more quickly from a party chat
  • You can now compare 3D audio and stereo audio on the same screen
  • Easily access in-progress Activities from game hubs
  • From anywhere on PS5, including during gameplay, you can say “Hey PlayStation, find [keyword] on YouTube.” The YouTube app will open and relevant search results will be shown.

On top of these latest additions, Sony announced that the companion PS App for smartphones will be getting a whole host of upgrades later this month, namely:

  • PS App users will be able to launch a PS Remote Play session directly from PS App on iOS and Android devices
  • PS App users will be able to request another party member playing on PS5 to start a Share Screen session, and then watch their friend’s gameplay from the app, similar to the newly added PS5 feature

While pretty, the initial launch software which came with the PS5 felt rather undercooked, especially when compared to the PS4 software following 7 years' worth of updates. It is therefore exciting to finally see the PS5 get some proper new functionality. Hopefully themes are next.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
