Both Summer Game Fest and E3 will have separate in-person events next year

We previously reported that despite being absent this year, the ESA confirmed that E3 will return in 2023 with not only a digital event, but an in-person one too. Interestingly, Geoff Keighley, host and creator of the Summer Game Fest Showcase, announced that he too will be coming back in 2023 for Summer Game Fest – and it will also be in-person.

Summer Game Fest was first established in 2020 as a response to the ESA’s announcement at the time that they would be skipping E3 due to COVID-19. While somewhat disorganised and hastily put together, 2020’s Summer Game Fest gave video game enthusiasts something to look forward to during that year’s Summer.

Keighley returned in 2021 with a bigger and better Summer Game Fest; E3 did too. That being said, the extent of E3’s contribution amounted essentially to a rebroadcasting of the Summer Game Fest events with its own hosts. Being a digital showcase however, the move was understandable.

Now that It has been officially announced that Summer Game Fest will return in 2023 bigger, better and in-person as well as online, it begs the question as to whether E3 and Summer Game Fest are set to clash.

Geoff Keighley is no stranger to creating major annual gaming events, with Summer Game Fest, The Game Awards and Gamescom: Opening Night Live all under his belt. That being said, we have yet to see any production on the level and breadth of E3 during the expo’s biggest years.

Of course, E3 was founded all the way back in 1995 and so have had their feet firmly planted for decades. The past few years have made E3 feel rather irrelevant, but that doesn't mean they can't make a grand return. Either way, Summer 2023 is going to be interesting.
