Cancelled Marvel MMO would have featured X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four and Shield

Late last year, it was confirmed that Daybreak Games had begun working on a new Marvel MMO as one of several new projects currently in development. Just six months later, the game has been cancelled after a period of pre-production. Based on details revealed following the cancellation, the game would have taken some art-style inspiration from Into the Spider-Verse.

Daybreak's Marvel MMO has officially been cancelled, just over half a year after being announced to investors. Initially, Daybreak parent company, EG7, planned to invest roughly $50 million USD in the project over the next three years, but after a period of pre-production, the company has decided to scrap those plans due to “development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy of the group”.

While we won't get the chance to play this game, some of the team's plans for it have surfaced following the cancellation. Stylistically, the game would take inspiration from Into the Spider-Verse, with lots of bright colours and contrast, rather than a more realistic look.

According to screenshots posted by Ramiro Galan, a designer that worked on the game, the MMO would have featured four key factions for players to join – X-Men, Avengers, Shield and the Fantastic Four. Players can then customise their characters and choose their powers. There would also be an outfit system in place, with different outfits providing buffs to certain stats.

All of the screenshots appear to be concept art, rather than an actual build of the game running. It is unclear how far the game got into development, but given the timetable from announcement to cancellation, it won't have made it beyond pre-production.

KitGuru Says: A Marvel MMO was always going to be a huge task, and it sounds like executives were spooked out of the project rather quickly, which is unfortunate because this could have been interesting. Particularly if the game could tap into some of that City of Heroes nostalgia.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
