Apple reportedly trademarks ‘RealityOS’ ahead of first VR/AR headset launch

It is no secret that Apple is working on Mixed Reality hardware, with plans for multiple devices over the next five years, including AR glasses, and a full headset. Now, according to new trademark filings, we know that these devices will run a new Apple OS – RealityOS. 

As reported by Bloomberg and Parker Ortolani, Apple has begun filing trademarks for something called ‘RealityOS', which is described as a “reality operating system”. Now years later, references to RealityOS have been discovered in recent Apple software updates, indicating that it is real.

With this trademark popping up, as well as references to the OS within Apple's code, we can assume that the company is close to announcing its first major AR or VR device. Previous leaks have pointed to a late 2022 launch for the first Apple headset, but those expectations have now shifted to 2023.

The first Apple headset has been described by sources as a ‘niche' device with ‘Mac level' computing power. The headset may also sport 4K OLED displays, and may pack a new M-series Apple processor. While we've heard plenty about the hardware side, we have not heard much about Apple's plans for content.

KitGuru Says: Apple's AR/VR headset plans have been openly discussed for years, but it seems that we're finally nearing an actual product launch. If Apple has the hardware finalised and is now working on getting the software platform ready, then we may hear something official before the end of this year.
