The line between TVs and monitors has been slowly blurring in recent years, especially with the release of huge 40-55″ gaming displays. Gigabyte's latest big gaming display, the S55U, blurs the line further with the addition of Android TV.
The Gigabyte S55U ships with an enormous 55-inch Quantum Dot VA panel with 4K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and 5ms of average G2G response time. The typical brightness of the panel is “only” 500nits, but it peaks up to 1500nits, allowing it to playback a wide range of HDR content, with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. In addition, the spec sheet also tells us the panel has a 10-bit colour depth, 132 local dimming zones and a 5000:1 contrast ratio. Moreover, the monitor can cover 96% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and 140% of the sRGB spectrum.
Something that makes the S55U stand out from other big gaming ‘monitors' is the addition of Android TV, as well as built-in Chromecast and Google Assistant features. With that in mind, this display would also be great for streaming media. Gigabyte has also paid extra attention to audio, equipping the S55U with two 10W speakers with Dolby Atmos and DTS HD.
Other gaming features, like the Black Equalizer, AMD FreeSync Premium, Aim Stabilizer Sync, and gaming-oriented overlays are also part of the package. Additionally, it has a 6-axis colour controller and a picture noise reduction filter.
Like most other large gaming displays, the included stand is basic, so don't expect height adjustment, pivot, or even much wiggle room for tilting. However, the display does support 400x300mm VESA mounts and arms, so you can swap out the stand if needed. For connectivity, the monitor includes 2x HDMI 2.1, 2x HDMI 2.0, audio-out, a USB-A 2.0, a USB-A 3.0, 2x serial ports, an Ethernet port and an optical fibre interface.
