AMD releases FSR SDK 2.2 with improvements to upscaling and Ray Regeneration

AMD has officially launched the FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) SDK 2.2, marking a major milestone in the evolution of its FSR “Redstone” technology stack. The updated SDK provides developers with the tools to implement FSR 4.1, Ray Regeneration 1.1, and Frame Generation 4.0 into their titles.

The headline feature, FSR Upscaling 4.1, focuses on reducing ‘softness' while upscaling by refining the underlying inference models. AMD claims the new upscaler has significantly improved temporal stability and detail retention. This should be more noticeable in motion-heavy scenes involving fine geometry, such as wind-blown grass or distant foliage, which now appear sharper and more consistent with native rendering.

In addition to upscaling, Ray Regeneration 1.1 introduces a more sophisticated ML-powered denoiser for ray-traced workloads. Unlike traditional analytical denoisers, this new iteration processes noisy ray-traced data in real time to deliver deeper shadows and more accurate global illumination. This tech is already being put to the test in Crimson Desert, where it is used to clean up complex reflections without the performance overhead traditionally associated with high-sample ray tracing.

The SDK also includes a technical preview of Radiance Caching 0.9, a feature designed to enhance the efficiency of global illumination. However, these advancements come with strict hardware requirements. AMD has confirmed that FSR 4.1 and its neural counterparts require RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs to function. Furthermore, the advanced denoising and caching features rely on DirectX 12 Shader Model 6.6, which requires the latest Microsoft Agility SDK.

KitGuru says: Have you tried the latest version of FSR in Crimson Desert? Hopefully we will see it in many more titles over the course of 2026.
