Call of Duty 2023 might be delayed due to disappointing Vanguard sales

The year 2023 might mark the first time in almost 20 years that players won't be able to play a new mainline Call of Duty title. As per a recent report, Warzone 2 is the only Call of Duty we'll get in 2023, as the main series game will be delayed for 2024.

According to Bloomberg, 2023's Call of Duty game, developed by Treyarch, will be delayed following poor sales of Vanguard, which executives believe to be related to how often Activision releases a new Call of Duty game. However, the report states that delaying the upcoming Call of Duty isn't linked to Microsoft acquiring the publisher.

On the other hand, the Infinity Ward-developed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is still on track to release later this year and should receive two years of support to compensate for the lack of a new game in 2023. In addition, Warzone 2 is also likely coming in 2023, co-developed by both Infinity Ward and Treyarch.

The new Infinity Ward-developed Call of Duty game should release later this year, during the holiday season. Warzone 2 is currently planned for 2023.

KitGuru says: There has been a new Call of Duty each year since 2005, so this delay is very significant. However, now the pressure will be on Infinity Ward to keep players engaged with Modern Warfare over two full years.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
