Samsung begins producing LTPO 120Hz displays reportedly for iPhone 13

While Apple updated the iPad Pro to support higher display refresh rates quite some time ago, the process of bringing this to the iPhone has been painfully slow. The end could be in sight, however, as new reports coming from supply chain sources indicate that we may finally see a 120Hz iPhone this year.

According to sources speaking with The Elec, Samsung Display and LG Display have both begun production on new displays for Apple's upcoming iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro smartphones. For the higher-end iPhone 13 devices, a Samsung 120Hz OLED will be used, while lower-tier iPhones will use an OLED display from LG.

As pointed out by 9to5Mac, Apple has been waiting to switch to low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED displays on the iPhone for a while now, which is why 120Hz support has taken so long.

As long as there are no delays in production this year, Apple should announce its new iPhone family in September, followed by availability a couple of weeks later.

KitGuru Says: Android flagships have been using high refresh rate displays for quite some time now, so this could be Apple's chance to finally catch up.
