Microsoft no longer acquiring Discord

Over the last few weeks, there has been a persistent rumour that Microsoft is in discussions to acquire popular chat app, Discord. The buyout offer is said to have been in the $10 billion to $12 billion range, but now, it reported that Discord is dropping negotiations and looking at becoming a publicly traded company instead. 

This week, The Wall Street Journal updated its report on the Microsoft/Discord negotiations, confirming that talks ended without a deal. Citing sources familiar with the matter, it is possible that negotiations pick up again at some point, but for now, Discord isn't selling.

Discord had interest from three companies, one of which was Microsoft. However, due to Discord's popularity and boost in users over the last year, the company is choosing to remain independent.

Of course, there is still another option for Discord to explore – an IPO. This would involve another valuation of Discord before opening up the company to shares being traded on the stock market as a public company. This is an option that Discord is said to be heavily considering.
