Mortal Kombat 11 sells 8 million copies as new updates teased

This generation has been great for fighting games. Not only have we seen the likes of Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, Tekken and Super Smash Bros. all find their way onto the current gen systems, but in many instances these entries are among the best selling in their respective franchises. One other fighting game seeing great success is Mortal Kombat 11, which has now officially surpassed 8 million copies sold.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Mortal Kombat’s co-creator Ed Boon said “After 8 million (and kounting) MK11 games sold we're not done yet,” adding that fans should “stay tuned to see what's next for MK11 this week! #KombatKontinues.”

8 million copies makes Mortal Kombat 11 not only one of the best selling Mortal Kombat games, but one of the best selling fighting games of all time. Currently, MK11 holds second place in its franchise, only behind Mortal Kombat X which surpassed 11 million copies sold.

Furthermore, MK11 is the 6th best selling fighting game of all time, behind Tekken 5, Tekken 3, Mortal Kombat X, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Upon its release in 2019, Mortal Kombat 11, alongside side Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, helped push 2019 to become the best year ever for fighting games. It is therefore no surprise to see the game selling so well. What will be interesting now is to see whether it manages to keep up its current moment, possibly even surpassing Mortal Kombat X to become the best selling game in the franchise. Time will tell.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
