Samsung expands its production capacity of 5nm EUV

Samsung has announced that it plans to expand its foundry capacity with a new production line in Pyongtaek, Korea. Samsung said that the new line will become the “core manufacturing base” for the company's production of 5G, high performance computing and AI solutions with 5nm EUV. 

Samsung said that construction of the new site began this month, and that if everything goes according to plan it will reach volume production in 2H 2021. The Korean-based tech company said the production line is built with the aim to meet the “growing global demand for cutting-edge extreme ultraviolet (EUV) solutions.”

The foundry line will focus on “5 nm and below” manufacturing technology, which implies that Samsung is planning to use the site for many years to come. Samsung's mass production of 5nm is looking to kick of at the Hwaseong fab in 2H 2020.

“This new production facility will expand Samsung’s manufacturing capabilities for sub-5nm process and enable us to rapidly respond to the increasing demand for EUV-based solutions,” said Dr. ES Jung, President and Head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics. “We remain committed to addressing the needs of our customers through active investments and recruitment of talents. This will enable us to continue to break new ground while driving robust growth for Samsung’s foundry business.”

KitGuru says: TSMC recently announced its plans to build a fab in the US. Now Samsung has also announced that it will build a new factory. Hopefully this will lead to better and cheaper technology for us consumers within a year or two.
