Oculus Quest 2 announced, Rift S is being discontinued

Facebook Connect took place last night and just as previously leaked, the Oculus Quest 2 was the big showstopper. The now official headset is coming in October and will completely replace both the original Quest and the PC-focused Oculus Rift line.

The Oculus Quest 2 packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 SoC, 6GB of RAM, up to 256GB of internal storage. You get a significant 50% resolution boost per eye, bringing it up to 1832×1920 pixels per eye. The new display is also capable of supporting 90Hz – the original standard that Oculus set with the original Rift.

Interestingly, the Oculus Quest 2 will launch with a $299 price tag, making it $100 cheaper than the original Quest at launch. As noted earlier, the Quest 2 is also intended to replace the Oculus Rift for PC VR gaming, this works via a “levelled-up PC VR gaming experience” using Oculus Link.

With the Quest 2, Oculus Link has been improved to support higher fidelity and frame rates, meaning Oculus Link users will be able to get the full 90Hz experience. Sales of the current Oculus Rift S will end in 2021, leaving the Quest 2 as the only VR headset in Facebook's lineup.

KitGuru Says: Facebook and Oculus are ditching other headsets and putting all of their chips into Quest, starting with the Quest 2. How do you all feel about this move? Are any of you planning to get an Oculus Quest 2?
