The CryEngine is getting support for mobile, starting with Android devices

Crytek has been making some notable upgrades to CryEngine lately, starting with ray-tracing support in 2019 and now expanding to a full mobile pipeline. With this latest update, CryEngine will be available for Android app developers for the first time.

Mobile support is starting off in beta, which developers can sign up to take part in. In partnership with Google, Crytek will bring “the cutting-edge 3D game development platform famed for its industry-leading renderer, real-time lighting, and optimized VR support”, to Android.

CryEngine is platform agnostic, so it should also support iOS at some point down the line. Much of the work on mobile tools for CryEngine began in the lead-up to releasing The Climb on Oculus Quest, which runs on a mobile SoC rather than traditional PC hardware.

Speaking about the new update, Theodor Mader, CryEngine Technical Director, said: “The CRYENGINE team is dedicated to helping game makers achieve their vision by putting the most powerful tools in the industry at their fingertips. We’re proud that teams of all sizes, all around the world, choose our game development platform, and by participating in the beta program, developers will get to experience what CRYENGINE can achieve on mobile chipsets, as well as participate in the development of the new Android pipeline.”

KitGuru Says: Mobile support was an area that saw CryEngine fall behind the likes of Unreal Engine and Unity. With this update, that will start to change, so it will be interesting to see what developers do with this new support. It will also be particularly interesting to see if Crytek has a mobile game project in the works to really push these new tools.
