Sony unveils new ‘PlayStation Studios’ umbrella brand

PlayStation is well known for developing consistently high quality and innovative games. Studios such as Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, and the recently acquired Insomniac Games all have well-loved franchises under their belts. It would appear that leading into the next generation, the console manufacturer is looking to tie all these studios and franchises under one name, and so it has unveiled PlayStation Studios – an umbrella brand created to “unite its first-party PlayStation titles.”

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, the Senior Vice President and Head of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment – Eric Lempel – stated that “Over the last few years — and even the last decade — the strength of the titles coming out from our studios has been stronger than ever. We have been thinking about how we unite all of these great games under one brand, and really the purpose of that is to make the consumer understand that, when they see this brand, they're getting ready for a robust, innovative, deep experience that they've come to expect from games coming from PlayStation. So we came up with PlayStation Studios.”

Accompanying the announcement was the new logo, alongside an opening animation which is set to feature at the beginning of titles developed under the brand. The animation is reminiscent of Marvel Studios’ opening animation, with various PlayStation mascots adorning the sides of the iconic Triangle, Circle, Cross and Square buttons. Lempel stated that “over time, as we introduce well established franchises, we can tailor that opening a bit to possibly show the franchise over the years, new characters that have come into play.”

The PlayStation Studios branding will feature elsewhere too. Alternate versions of the animation and logo will feature in trailers, advertising, packaging, and even the game disks themselves. Sony has always had a relatively strong brand recognition, but with the upcoming release of next-gen, it seems the console manufacturer intends on doubling down on letting players know when a game is a ‘PlayStation Studios’ title, lending an extra level of prestige to it.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
