Phil Spencer says Scalebound is not coming back

It has been around three years since Microsoft cancelled Scalebound and while PlatinumGames has been staying very busy ever since, a lot of fans still have hope that the game will return someday. Unfortunately, according to Xbox head, Phil Spencer, that won't be happening.

On the latest episode of IGN's ‘Unlocked' podcast, Phil Spencer was interviewed and asked about the rumours around Scalebound returning and his answer was pretty straight to the point: “We're not working on it. I'm not at Platinum today but I'm almost positive they're not working on it. It's something we've all moved past. It's not something I see as a high point in my role, having to cancel a game we'd talked about for years, but for the people out there thinking there's something still in the works, there's not.”

While Scalebound was scrapped, Phil Spencer still has “a ton of respect” for Platinum and Hideki Kamiya. Spencer also acknowledges his own mistakes during the process: “I regret we were as public about what we tried to go do. I did some learning around Fable Legends and Scalebound about being public about things before I know we have a real, believable plan that I can hold in my hands and know was going to be there. And we just didn't get there with Scalebound and the team. And I say that about both teams.”

Of course, Platinum has its plate full at the moment anyways, with Bayonetta 3, The Wonderful 101 Remastered, Project GG and other unannounced games in the works spread across two studios.

KitGuru Says: Scalebound was one of the reasons I originally bought an Xbox One, so it will always be a bit disappointing that the game never made it out. However, we are approaching a new generation of consoles and Microsoft seems to have a winning plan up its sleeve this time around so hopefully, a similar situation won't play out again later down the line.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
