Samsung commits to monthly security patches for Galaxy S10, S7 moves to quarterly

Over the last couple of years, Google has been pushing its Android partners to do a better job of keeping on top of security updates. As one of the largest Android phone makers around, Samsung has been one of the focus points here. This week, Samsung updated its security patch commitments, moving older devices down to quarterly updates, while the Galaxy S10 will get monthly patches.

These monthly and quarterly security updates contain Samsung-specific features, in addition to Google's own Android patches. Right now, it looks like devices that are three years old will get quarterly updates, while anything newer will get monthly security patches.

The monthly security update list includes: Galaxy S7 Active, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S8 Active, Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10e, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A8 (2018).

The Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S8 Lite and Note FE have all moved to the quarterly patch class, joining a lengthy list of other A-series, J-series, M-series and Tab devices. You can see the full list, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Android has had its share of security scares over the years, so it is good to see a company like Samsung taking it seriously and committing to regular updates. Hopefully other device makers will also start to be more transparent about their supported devices.
