Samsung rumoured to open up Bixby to third-party developers

With the launch of the Galaxy S8 last year, Samsung also made a big push for its own alternative to Alexa, Siri and Google Now in the form of Bixby. Unfortunately, Bixby hasn't really matched the competition, which is something the company is hoping to correct by opening things up for other developers to take a crack at.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Samsung is planning to open up Bixby to third-party developers for the first time. This is something that Google and Amazon already offer, which has paved the way for improvements, new features and better app integration.

The idea is that developers will create ‘capsules' for Bixby, which is a similar concept to Amazon's Alexa ‘skills'. This should bring an extra push of developer support for Samsung's smart assistant.

This will be a requirement for Samsung's smart home push, which will see Bixby integrated into a smart speaker and other devices in the future.

KitGuru Says: Bixby is currently struggling to catch up to some of the more popular smart assistants. Hopefully a bigger developer push will improve things in time for the Galaxy S10 launch in early 2019. Do many of you use Bixby at all?
