Microsoft’s free Windows 10 upgrade for ‘assistive technology’ users is coming to an end

Microsoft ‘officially’ stopped offering a free Windows 10 upgrade to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users in 2016. However, a couple of well-known workarounds have remained present ever since. One of those was to upgrade via Microsoft’s ‘assistive technologies’ program. Unfortunately, this upgrade method will be closed soon.

Microsoft extended its free Windows 10 upgrade offer for those who require Windows’ assistive technologies. That said, there was no confirmation system in place, so anyone could upgrade for free using this method. However, In an update to the page, Microsoft confirmed that this offer will now expire on the 31st of December this year.

If you have yet to upgrade to Windows 10, then you have until the end of December this year to do so for free, under the assistive technology program. After that, you will need to buy a new license, which costs £98.00 for the Home edition and £150 for the Pro edition.

KitGuru Says: At some point, security updates are going to stop landing on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, so it’s best to upgrade sooner rather than later. Have any of you held off on Windows 10 so far? Do you plan on upgrading soon?

  1. Hmmm…weird I have upgraded several PC’s since Win 10 went from free to pay and never used the assistive option it just did the win 7 or 8.1 upgrade for free like it did before. So this mean most likely all upgrades will no longer work after Dec 31 2017.
