Like with many other annual franchises, Call of Duty has continued to release its games onto last-gen consoles – meaning PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While early reports claimed that 2026’s entry (believed to be Modern Warfare 4) would be the first to launch exclusively on 9th-gen consoles, new leaks seem to suggest that Infinity Ward’s next title could still be targeting last-gen.
As reported by known Call of Duty leaker HeyImAlaix, 2026’s upcoming and unannounced COD title (believed to be Modern Warfare 4) “is currently being playtested on PS4.”
While it does not mean that the final game will make its way onto last-gen devices, this report is interesting as previous leaks claimed that 2026’s Call of Duty would be running on a new version of the IW Engine – and as such would be the first to be PS5/Xbox Series exclusive.
The official Call of Duty account on Twitter has since commented on the leak, writing: “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4”. While this seems to definitively refute the rumour, the specific wording of “not being developed for PS4” does leave some leeway for them to later claim that it's being developed for current-gen but will be back-ported to last-gen.
In case you missed it, various details regarding this year’s COD have spread over the past few months, with claims being made that it will be called Modern Warfare 4; will make use of an updated engine; is said to feature a new version of their DMZ extraction mode and as mentioned will be current-gen only.
All that said, since the introduction of Call of Duty HQ much of the work being done on future COD entries has leaked in one form or another – due to the unified nature of the engine – and so it is entirely possible that evidence of their development on PS4 is simply a by-product of this. We will have to wait and see.
