Ouya could have Firefox support

While you might be looking forward to the Ouya Android console for many reasons, there could now be one more. Mozilla is currently working on making a Ouya compatible version of its Firefox browser, as well as making it easily navigable with a controller.

The announcement was made on the OuyaForum by administrator Ed Krassenstein, who said that he was informed by the Mozilla Foundation early yesterday. The message read: “We’re investigating what we need to do to make Firefox usable on Ouya. It already works and we have some preliminary patches for gamepad support, but there’s still quite a bit of work to be done to make it really usable. Part of this work will be making sure that WebGL and Canvas support performs well on the device, and making sure that the relevant APIs (such as Gamepad API) are also supported.”

As a follow up, Chris Lord from Mozilla posted the following image on his Twitter account, suggesting work was progressing well. Note the clear plastic Ouya dev. kit on the desk.

Nice mug.

However one caveat is that the tweet read: “Kinda unusable atm,” which suggests development is in its very early stages.

This is still good news for the Ouya though, as it adds functionality to a piece of kit that a lot of people are already excited about for its low cost gaming credentials.
