AOL under flak over editorial urging men to ‘masturbate’

America Online published an article a few days ago which hasn't been very well received by many readers. They suggested that many men fake orgasms and that those who have problems getting stimulated should masturbate to help ‘discover what stimulates you'.

The piece was published on the main screen on AOL's welcome page and everyone could see it, apart from those who registered as a minor. Since Arianna Huffington took over as AOL's chief of content, many have said that there is a more ‘open way of thinking' across the publications. The headline was also featured on AOL's general website. WorldNetDaily say the editorial has caused controversy among some of the readership.

The welcome screen had the headline ‘Do Men Fake Orgasms' and then linked to an article at EveryDayHealth.com. This is the AOL health site, so everything was interconnected.

The health site said  “Ever wonder if his ‘big O' was all a big show? Turns out, plenty of guys say they have faked an orgasm at least once. Here's why. If you think women are the only ones who bluff in the bedroom, think again: One in four men say they have faked an orgasm at some point in their sex lives. For both men and women, faking orgasms seems to be tied to relationship troubleshooting – namely how one is perceived during and after sex.”

The article urged males to “Masturbate. Self-stimulation is recommended to help you discover what stimulates you. Next, share this information with your partner.”

While it seems like a positive article to many, there will always be a portion of the audience who find such upfront editorial pieces offensive and unwarranted.
