PlayStation seem to have severely shot themselves in the disc with the announcement that they will be getting rid of physical media come 2028.

Commenting on the announcement that PlayStation will stop printing discs, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen has claimed that this latest move “doesn’t matter at all."

85% of all PlayStation 4 and PS5 game sales during the past Quarter (ending 31st of March 2026) were digital titles, with just 15% physical.

For a while, it seemed as though both digital and physical mediums could co-exist in the games industry. Unfortunately, through the evolution of technology, the de-evolution of the industry and what seems to be a concerted effort to make the overall experience worse, physical media is now in many ways objectively inferior to digital.
