Microsoft is working on more efficient Xbox Series X chips

Every console generation, we eventually see a hardware refresh of sorts, whether its by using a more power efficient chip and sold as a ‘slim' console, or something more substantial like last generation's PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Right now, it appears that Microsoft has begun working on its next major console revision for the Xbox Series X.

According to long-time Microsoft journalist, Brad Sams, Microsoft “was working on revisions” of the Xbox Series X chip. Sams adds that he believes this refresh is focused on “making cooler, more efficient chips”, which would lower production costs.

This more efficient Xbox Series X APU would likely be packaged in a new edition of the console. However, it is also worth noting that this puts the Xbox Series S in an odd position, as it is already intended to be the cheaper, slim console.

It is also possible that Microsoft rolls out the new chip silently and makes no other changes to the Xbox Series X design. Currently, Sony is also rumoured to be working on new PlayStation hardware as well.

KitGuru Says: We're nearing on two years into the current-gen cycle, so new hardware revisions can't be too far behind. I doubt we'll hear much more on this front until 2023 though.
