We’ve seen a great number of horror franchises succeed in the video game space, with 2017’s Friday the 13th: The Game being of particular note. Unfortunately, the multiplayer title saw its end-of-life arrive much sooner than expected due to licensing issues. That said, Jason Voorhees isn’t done yet, with a new video game based on the IP said to be currently in the works.
As reported by the horror-focused publication Bloody Disgusting, during a recent San Diego Comic-Con panel the vice president of Friday the 13th’s production company (Horror Inc.) confirmed that a new video game based on the IP is in the works.
While discussing the next film entry in the series, VP Robbie Barsamian teased that “a new sequel movie and new sequel game are at the top of our list. It’s where most of our energy’s going right now. And I can tell you finally we’re in a position to deliver on that.”
Reiterating this fact, Barsamian added: “While we’re not officially announcing with our partners today, both are coming. They’re both in the works and they’re both coming.”
Of course, for our purposes the Friday the 13th game is what’s of interest here. Curiously, given that it was described as a “sequel game” it is currently unknown whether this unnamed title will be a sequel to the 2017 game, or a video game based on this upcoming sequel film.
Regardless, whatever this ends up being, hopefully the game does not wind up in its own set of legal issues. Fortunately, all that was settled back in 2021 and so it should be unlikely. That said, we will have to wait and see.
