Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 to get Nintendo Switch 2 editions with no upgrade path

One of the core strategies seen with the Nintendo Switch 2 is the continuous release of upgraded versions of older titles in the form of Switch 2 Editions. Set to join the list soon, Square Enix’s well-regarded JRPG series ‘Octopath Traveler’ is officially being upgraded for the Switch 2. Unfortunately, it’ll cost you a pretty penny.

Making the official announcement, Square Enix unveiled their Switch 2 Editions of both Octopath Traveler 1 and 2. Available from today in Japan (and coming to the West on the 1st of October), this enhanced release promises upgrades in the form of improved resolutions and framerates – but seemingly nothing else.

Of course, Octopath Traveler is a HD-2D styled game, and so there isn’t much that could be done outside of these aforementioned enhancements.

Despite the modest upgrades however, those wanting to get their hands on these Switch 2 Editions will have to cough up a surprising amount of money: with both Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 setting you back $60 each. Adding a cherry on top of all this, those who do purchase these versions won’t be able to transfer their save files over from the OG Switch releases.

Given the relative lack of major enhancements, charging any amount of additional money for these Switch 2 Editions seems a bit of a stretch – let alone a full $60. It will be interesting to see how these enhanced ports wind up being received when they arrive in a couple months’ time.
