Sea of Thieves is getting a live-action film adaptation – produced by Spider-Man Director

Just like Sony, Microsoft has been dipping its toes into the video game adaptation market. While their first attempt (Halo) failed to lead to great success, the console maker appears to be ramping up its efforts. Alongside new details on the previously-announced Gears of War Netflix film, Microsoft has now revealed that a live-action film is being developed based on the live-service hit Sea of Thieves – coming from Spider-Man: Brand New Day Director Destin Daniel Cretton.

As reported by the publication Entertainment Weekly, alongside their ongoing work on the upcoming Gears of War film, Microsoft / Xbox are giving some of their other franchises the live-action treatment.

Though coming as quite a surprise, the console maker officially confirmed that they are developing a live-action film adaptation of Rare’s popular Sea of Thieves. Details on the project remain light for now, with the only confirmed detail being that it will be produced by Destin Daniel Cretton’s ‘Hisako Films’. For the uninitiated, Cretton is best known for directing the MCU’s Shang Chi as well as the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Sea of thieves Live-action

Speaking on the adaptation, Xbox CCO Matt Booty addressed the game’s live-service nature and how this will bleed into the film, stating: “The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community. So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it's not, Who are the main characters? What's the plot? It's a super social game, but there's a tone to Sea of Thieves. It's built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that's going to be like.”

There’s no denying that Sea of Thieves is one of Xbox’s biggest successes, with the live-service title amassing over 40 million players by 2024 – even more once accounting for its PlayStation release.

Even so, it will be interesting to see how Xbox / Hisako Films choose to adapt the IP given its lack of narrative. That said, Disney managed to do just that with Pirates of the Caribbean, and so we will have to wait and see.
