AMD gains approval for $35 billion Xilinx acquisition

Back in 2020, AMD announced plans to acquire Xilinx in a deal worth roughly $35 billion. Like any major acquisition, the deal was subject to regulatory approval. A week on from Nvidia's $40 billion Arm acquisition being scrapped, AMD has managed to gain approval for its Xilinx buyout.

After various companies and regulators raised their concerns regarding Nvidia's acquisition, the chipmaker announced it wouldn't acquire ARM due to regulatory challenges. However, it seems that those same regulators are not concerned with AMD buying Xilinx. In an announcement today, AMD confirmed it has gained “all necessary approvals” to move forward with the acquisition.

According to AMD, the company has been approved by all necessary authorities to acquire Xilinx. Now with that out of the way, the company can swiftly move towards closing the transaction, which it expects to do as early as next week.

With Xilinx, AMD will increase its presence in the professional solutions market, offering an extensive line-up of FPGAs, SOMs, SoCs, ACAPs, accelerators and software for many industries, including aerospace, defence, data centre and automotive, to name a few.
