Arm to cut hundreds of jobs following failed Nvidia merger

Arm's future plans were drastically changed recently when a deal to be acquired by Nvidia fell through. Now, Arm is going through changes, the first of which appears to be a 12 to 15 percent decrease in staff, putting hundreds out of a job.

Arm chief, Rene Haas, reportedly told staff this week that between 12 to 15 percent of employees would be let go. Currently, Arm employs an estimated 6,500 people across the world, and the downsizing will primarily impact those working for the company in the US and UK.

As reported by The Telegraph (via The Verge), Haas explained in an email that this change is aimed to make the company “more disciplined” about costs and where money is invested. The change should “remove duplication of work” and certain projects that are “no longer critical” to the company's future will be scrapped.

This all comes a month after Nvidia's $40 billion deal to acquire Arm fell through. Now, Arm will apparently pursue an IPO and transform into a publicly traded company.

KitGuru Says: I do wonder if the cancellation of the Nvidia-Arm deal means that the Grace CPU project will be impacted. Arm seems to be going through some internal reshuffling and it seems certain projects are being scrapped or shelved.
