Warcraft 3’s new patch introduces balance changes and proper widescreen support

Back in February, Warcraft 3 remaster rumors began swirling once again as Blizzard began inviting old pro players to take part in a secret event. Unfortunately, a remaster didn't end up coming to fruition, but Blizzard did announce that it would be updating Warcraft 3 to support modern PCs and add in some balance changes. Now, the first update has landed on Warcraft 3's Public Test Realm.

It has been 16 years since Blizzard first launched Warcraft 3, but the studio hasn't forgotten about it. Over the last few years, Blizzard has been making an effort to ensure its classic titles can remain alive and playable on modern systems today and into the future. This started off with the original Starcraft and now, attention is being turned to Warcraft.

The update currently available on the Warcraft 3 PTR adds some UI changes and true widescreen support, so the game will no longer ‘stretch' to fit modern displays. The interface has been tweaked a bit for this, but that's not the only change made in the patch.

Game lobbies have been expanded to support up to 24 players and a slew of balance changes have been introduced, affecting just about every in-game hero. Some bug fixes have also been introduced, so missing textures should no longer be an issue, default resolution should be better, clans can be created again and ladder maps have had their tower locations tweaked. KitGuru Says: It's always good to see publishers like Blizzard continuing to support their classic games. Warcraft 3 might not be the most played game on Battle.net but it's a big part of gaming history with a huge fan base behind it. Will any of you be diving in to Warcraft 3 to check out the new patch? Or would it take a true remaster to bring you back in?
