Starfield has been out on PS5 for a few days. I finally picked it up last night, started up a fresh save and was immediately met with a game crash. Unfortunately, I'm not alone in this experience, with many players experiencing system crashes and hangs during gameplay. However, Bethesda is looking to quickly address those issues with incoming patches.
In an update shared this week, Bethesda thanked fans for jumping into Starfield over the weekend, adding that the team is “aware of some reported PS5 crashing issues and have narrowed them down to a small number of causes”.
Bethesda says that a hotfix patch will be sent out later this week to address these crash problems. I was fortunate in that my game crashed during the opening moments, before I could even create my character, but others have lost more significant amounts of progress. That will hopefully no longer be an issue once this patch arrives.
Starfield landed on PS5 late last week alongside the game's latest story DLC, Terran Armada, as well as a major free update with other changes and new content. It is unclear exactly how well the game has sold after opening itself up to the PlayStation platform, but we should get a better idea on that when Microsoft's next earnings report rolls around.
KitGuru Says: Starfield didn't reach as broad of an audience as it should have at launch. Now that the game isn't locked into any kind of console exclusivity, I do think we'll see more positive sentiment around it from the new wave of players.
