The factory behind physical PS5 games is already being repurposed

Sony’s move away from physical PlayStation games appears to be firmly underway, as the factory responsible for producing Blu‑ray discs for PS5 titles is already being repurposed, putting an end to fan hopes that Sony would change its mind and reverse course.

Earlier this week, we learned that Sony will stop manufacturing physical PlayStation games in 2028. Many fans hoped backlash might force the company to reconsider, but a new report indicates the transition is already locked in. According to a new update from ORF.at, the Austrian factory that produces Blu‑ray discs for PlayStation titles is being transformed to manufacture micro‑optics instead.

The CEO of DADC, the company responsible for producing discs for Sony’s physical games, says they have seen a dramatic reduction in order volume. PlayStation previously accounted for around 50% of the factory’s output, but that figure is expected to drop to just 10% by 2028, when Sony exits the physical games market entirely.

As a result, DADC has informed employees that the facility will be repurposed, shifting away from disc manufacturing and toward producing micro-optical lenses for Sony. The report also confirms that Sony has invested €30 million to equip the factory for its new role. Employees have already been briefed on the change, and DADC says that while this is a major pivot, no jobs will be lost.

KitGuru Says: This update makes Sony’s 2028 deadline feel far more concrete. With the disc factory already being retooled, it seems extremely unlikely that fan backlash will reverse the decision. Physical PlayStation games really do appear to be on the way out.
