Xbox has been quietly working on a disc to digital conversion feature for some time now. Microsoft first filed a patent for the technology back in 2022, before reportedly moving much closer to release in recent months. 

One of the biggest news stories of the year (in the video games space at least) was the announcement that Sony would officially stop printing PlayStation game discs come January 2028. Reactions to the news were swift and visceral, with countless fans expressing their disdain for the move. Finally, after a month of silence, Sony has officially commented on the matter once again.

PlayStation seem to have severely shot themselves in the disc with the announcement that they will be getting rid of physical media come 2028.

According to industry analysts, a mere 7 PS5 games have sold more than 100K physical disc copies in the US throughout 2026.

Sony’s move away from physical PlayStation games appears to be firmly underway, as the factory responsible for producing Blu‑ray discs for PS5 titles is already being repurposed, putting an end to fan hopes that Sony would change its mind and reverse course. 

According to insiders, Grand Theft Auto VI will be getting a proper disc-based physical release some time after launch in December.

Following other back-tracked decisions, Microsoft has now confirmed that some of its upcoming Xbox games will include a disc in the box after all.

While Microsoft is not doing a full-blown physical release for Hellblade II Enhanced, the publisher is partnering with Limited Run Games to print discs.

Despite a general trend toward digital games purchases, physical media still has a major presence, especially in Europe and the UK.

Unlike the Xbox version, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will include a physical disc on PS5. Unfortunately, it features less than 20% of the data on-disc.
