Intel’s i9-12900HK can outperform a Threadripper 1950X in Cinebench R20

Intel only announced the company's new 12th Gen Core laptop CPUs last week, but thanks to an early preview from Lab501, we've already got some performance data for the Core i9-12900HK mobile CPU, showing what the processor can do in Cinebench R20 and other benchmarks.

The Core i9-12900HK preview comes from Lab501 (via VideoCardz). In it, the Lab501 took the Core i9-12900HK for a ride in Cinebench R20, Cinebench R15, Blender 2.78, PCMark 8 and WinRAR 6.0, comparing its scores with other CPUs to see how it stacks up against the competition. As a reminder, the Core i9-12900HK is a TDP unlocked processor with 14 cores (6x P-cores and 8x E-cores), 20 threads and a maximum clock speed of 5.0GHz

Comparing the Intel Core i9-12900HK scores with other laptop chips, Intel's new flagship laptop processor is the clear winner across all tests by a considerable margin. Part of this could be due to the DDR5-4800 memory used, but even so, in Cinebench R20 the i9-12900HK outperformed its predecessor by 17%, and even proved marginally faster than the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X.

However, it appears that such performance does come at a cost. Although Lab501's testing showed the 12900HK can reach its maximum advertised clock speed, the CPU had to pull 113W of power while doing so, with temperatures rising to 99C.

KitGuru says: While this is impressive, we will have to wait and see what sort of performance AMD's upcoming 6nm-based Ryzen 9 6980HX CPU could offer.
