Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion announced; not coming to last-gen

CD Projekt RED recently held their latest Night City Wire stream, where the studio announced and released a major update in the form of patch 1.6. Perhaps even more exciting however was the official unveiling of the game’s upcoming expansion, named ‘Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.’

Ahead of its release some time in 2023, CDPR officially gave fans their first look at Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion through a concise 1-minute teaser trailer – the description of which reads as follows:

“I, V, do solemnly swear that I shall faithfully serve the New United States of America. Get ready for Phantom Liberty — a spy-thriller expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 set in an all new district of Night City. Coming in 2023 to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Stadia.”

While the teaser itself keeps things quite vague (as a teaser should), the aforementioned description confirms that this expansion will bring with it a new district. Furthermore, in describing it as a ‘spy-thriller’, the Phantom Liberty expansion may deviate quite a bit from the main game’s feel – both narratively and gameplay wise.

Though it is exciting to get our first look at the game’s expansion, CDPR did confirm that last-gen players will be left behind, with the expansion – and all major updates following patch 1.6 – only coming to current-gen devices, meaning no PS4 or Xbox One support. This is somewhat unsurprising given the game’s dire state on these systems, but for those who have not yet upgraded to the latest generation of devices, this announcement may disappoint.

Last but not least, though we were not given a release date beyond simply ‘2023’ the conclusion of the teaser seems to hint at the fact that the Phantom Liberty expansion might release as early as February due to the ‘2’ in 2023 fading out last. We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, all players can enjoy patch 1.6 (the Edgerunners update) right now.

KitGuru Games: DLSS 5 misses the point

It would be hard to argue that NVIDIA’s DLSS technologies haven’t been a net positive to the PC space, with the machine-learning based upscaler successfully translating lower resolution inputs into a final image which is perceivably sharper while hogging fewer resources. Though somewhat more contentious, the next evolution of DLSS came in the form of Frame Generation, using ML in order to generate additional frames for high-refresh rate gaming. Both techniques can have their issues, but generally speaking they’ve allowed for more people to experience higher-end titles at increased frame rates. DLSS 5, however, takes a sharp pivot, with a very different end goal in mind than the performance-boosting versions that came before.
