Modder puts 32GB of LPDDR5X-7500 memory on ROG Ally

Upgrading the memory on a desktop is simple, but the new age of handheld gaming PCs is a different story, requiring specific teardown knowledge and the right tools for the job. Still, it is possible, as one modder was able to upgrade an ROG Ally with 32GB of ultra-fast DDR5 memory.

SlickBuys Mods and Repairs (via Club386) is a company that offers modding and upgrade services. In this video, you see one of its employees modding an ROG Ally, doubling the device's memory capacity while also increasing the memory speed from 6400 MT/s to 7500 MT/s, moving the default LPDDR5 RAM to LPDDR5X. This mod requires removing and replacing four memory modules, followed by removing and reprogramming the BIOS chip for the new modules. Failure to properly perform these steps can result in underwhelming performance or other unexpected issues.

The mod upgrades the original Samsung 16GB LPDDR5-6400 memory modules with a 4×4 GB (32Gb) configuration to Samsung's LPDDR5X-7500 memory with a 4x8GB (64Gb) configuration. This modification increases memory speed by 17%, which can significantly impact game performance because the AMD RDNA 3 iGPU depends on the system memory.

It's worth noting that there are currently no Ryzen Z1 systems with 32GB of RAM officially available, so the only way to get this is via modding.
