For around a year now, we have been hearing rumours about a new StarCraft game being in development. Now, we have our strongest evidence yet thanks to new job openings at Blizzard.
Blizzard is currently looking for a lead designer to work on an “unannounced game” described as a “AAA open-world shooter”. The listing also hints that Unreal Engine may be used for this project rather than one of Blizzard's in-house engines.
As PC Gamer points out, this is not the first time that we've heard about a new shooter being in development at Blizzard. Back in 2024, Jason Schreier reported in his book on the company that the early stages of work were underway on a third-person StarCraft shooter.
Blizzard had famously cancelled a previous StarCraft shooter attempt, StarCraft: Ghosts, after years of development. Footage of that game has gradually leaked over time, but for many years it did appear that the dream of a StarCraft shooter was dead. Over the past year, other sources have also come out to claim that multiple new StarCraft games are in development, but Blizzard has yet to announce anything officially.
KitGuru Says: This could also feasibly have something to do with Overwatch based on the information provided in the job listing but given all of the recent buzz around a StarCraft shooter, it does feel like the more likely candidate.
