Halo franchise is reportedly being ‘rebooted’ under Activision, according to insider

As part of Microsoft’s ‘Xbox Reset’ we’ve seen the console maker engage in a number of sweeping changes, including but not limited to the shutting down of studios, the absorption of others, and lay-offs amounting to 1000s of developers when all is said and done. During their latest memo, Microsoft revealed that Halo Studios would be no more, with the iconic franchise now set to be developed under the wing of Activision. While we do not know officially what direction Master Chief and co. will take with future entries, according to insiders, the entire Halo series could be heading towards a full-on reboot.

Ever since Microsoft announced that Halo Studios would no longer be in charge of Halo, with future entries set to be developed under Activision, there have been a great deal of leaks and rumours discussing what this means for the future of what was once one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.

Of course, prior to these changes, Halo Studios were partway through remaking the OG Trilogy, with Halo Campaign Evolved arriving just a few months ago (the ending of which all-but-confirmed that a remake of 2 was on its way).

This seems to no longer be the case, with known insider Rebs Gaming claiming that all prior plans (including an unannounced Halo 7 concept) have now been scrapped. In terms of where the series will go from here, Tom Henderson of Insider-Gaming took to their podcast, stating that “from what I understand, the Halo franchise is being rebooted.”

Activision Halo Studios

As with all leaks and rumours, this should be taken with a pinch of salt. That said, such a move would make sense, especially given that 343i / Halo Studios have fumbled the bag on multiple occasions – especially in the eyes of hardcore fans.

How much of a reboot this would be remains to be seen. The original Halo trilogy in particular is sacred to many fans, and so upending the entire history and lore of the franchise could very well upset its core audience.

That said, part of this restructure is most likely in an effort to expand Halo as a brand to a wider audience outside of past players, and so reintroducing everyone to this world on a more level playing field could make sense.

Ultimately, no matter what direction they choose to take, the next Halo game will likely be many years away, and so it’s entirely possible that even Microsoft themselves don’t yet know. We will simply have to wait and see.
