Infinity Ward announces DMZ Early Access for Modern Warfare 4 pre-orders

For this year’s entry in Activision’s annual Call of Duty franchise, lead studio Infinity Ward appears to be betting big on its DMZ mode – a more fleshed out version of its extraction shooter first introduced with 2022’s MW2. Seemingly in service of getting as many players to check out the mode as soon as possible, the team have now revealed that as with its campaign, those who pre-order Modern Warfare 4 will be able to drop into DMZ ahead of its official launch.

Though they shied away from the practice for a few years, Modern Warfare 4 will see the return of Campaign Early Access, allowing all those who pre-ordered the upcoming COD to experience its story mode a week ahead of its 23rd Oct launch (playable instead from Friday the 16th of October).

While this has been known for some time, Infinity Ward has now added another bonus for pre-ordering, confirming that DMZ will also be playable in advance of the 23rd – albeit only a few days early.

Now going live on Tuesday the 20th of October, all those who pre-order MW4 will be able to drop into the demilitarised zone three days early, giving you the opportunity to rank up your operator and weapons in anticipation of its wider global launch.

Reactions to the announcement have been somewhat mixed, with multiplayer-focused players lamenting that early access to DMZ could allow some to hop into multiplayer on the 23rd with many of their guns; equipment; perks and more all unlocked.

That said, having a staggered pre-release such as this does have its own benefits, including giving the DMZ mode a couple days of exclusivity, hopefully endearing players to the mode. We will have to wait and see what players think of DMZ when it arrives in just over a week’s time.
