Ubisoft has been quietly cancelling many internal projects as it has looked to reduce operating costs in the wake of dwindling sales for its flagship games. Fortunately for Tom Clancy fans, the Splinter Cell Remake is still alive and well.

After years of releasing all its titles first on the Epic Games Store as well as its own launcher, Ubisoft have finally confirmed that they will begin to publish their games day-and-date on Steam starting with next year’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows. As part of this, the publisher has been furthering the integration of its games with Steam – finally bringing Achievements to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

For decades, Atlus has been most known as the studio behind the much-loved RPG series Shin Megami Tensei as well as its arguably more popular spin-off ‘Persona’. As such, expanding out with a new IP appeared to have been a risky move for the studio – a move which has paid off, as Metaphor: ReFantazio is currently the highest rated game of 2024.

There has been a big shake-up behind the scenes at Microsoft for Halo. After the Slipstream engine proved to be a failure that hampered the development of Halo Infinite, future titles will be developed with Unreal Engine 5. On top of that, 343 Industries is now known as Halo Studios. 

With Halo Infinite failing to become the decade-long platform that Microsoft and 343 Industries were hoping it would evolve into, there have been many leaks and rumours discussing the team’s plan for the franchise’s future. In amongst talk of a switch to Unreal Engine 5 as well as a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, 343i have announced a surprise 3rd-person mode coming to Infinite next month.

Just over a year ago, Bethesda Games Studios released Starfield – a ‘big space game’ which had been ruminating in Todd Howard’s mind for over 25 years. Despite its grand ambitions, the title saw a mixed reaction from fans, though positive critic reviews. Unfortunately, it seems as though Starfield’s first expansion ‘Shattered Space’ has failed to impress players on both sides.

Following months of leaks and rumours, Sony officially announced the remaster for its 2017 PS4 title Horizon Zero Dawn – set to come to PS5 and PC on the 31st of October. While there does exist a cheap upgrade path for those who already own the game, Sony appears to be attempting to block any loopholes, with the original game now being delisted from the Epic Games Store.

One month on from its initial release and Star Wars Outlaws does not appear to be performing well, with reports revealing it sold just 1 million copies. To put that figure into perspective, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sold eight million copies in its first few months on the market.

Last night during Sony's latest State of Play showcase, we finally got our first look at what Sucker Punch has been working on since the launch of its open-world hit, Ghost of Tsushima. We are finally getting a sequel, titled 'Ghost of Yotei' and better yet, it will be out next year. 

Concord marked the latest attempt by Sony to capitalise off of the hype and perceived popularity surrounding live-service games. Released on the 23rd of August, the Destiny x Overwatch like Hero Shooter lasted less than two weeks before being fully shut down by Sony – refunding all of the roughly 25,000 copies which were estimated to have sold during that time. In the immediacy following this monumental failure, there have been a variety of opinions on just why this game flopped so spectacularly. While certainly not the only reason, I believe that the primary cause of its failings is simple: Hero Shooters are boring.

Earlier this month, Sony officially started PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations, teasing a couple of their plans at the time. The PlayStation maker has now ramped up the celebrations in a major way – unveiling a suite of limited edition PS5 consoles and accessories.

Despite being one of the longest-running and most popular video game franchises of all time, Square Enix has struggled to keep Final Fantasy as relevant as it was during the series’ peak. Despite releasing two highly rated Final Fantasy games over the past year or so, Square Enix has reported that the titles “unfortunately did not meet our expectations.”

Back in September of last year, EA officially announced that they were working on a game known as ‘Project Rene’ – aka Sims 5. Since then however, it seems the publisher has pivoted its priorities, now announcing that Sims 4 will continue to live on with new multiplayer expansions and more.

Over the past generation, we have seen Sony increasingly embrace the PC gaming market more and more, bringing its back catalogue of games to the platform, as well as some select day-one releases. In an unsurprising move however, the PlayStation manufacturer has now reaffirmed the fact that consoles will remain the company’s core priority.

Since the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S back in late 2020, we have seen Ubisoft update many of its Assassin’s Creed titles to support 60fps of the now-current-gen consoles. Oddly, one of the primary titles to not get updated was Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – though this appears to be changing soon.

While the announcement of the long-awaited PlayStation 5 Pro has been somewhat controversial due to its high asking price, it seems as though many of the Pro system’s announced features are in fact the real deal. One of the most discussed PS5  exclusives to suffer from visual issues was Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but according to Digital Foundry, the PS5 Pro version offers a “night and day difference.”
