Nissan launch new LEAF car: total electric design

Nissan say that the future has arrived. They have released the world's first 100% electric car, which is a five seat family model. It is that revolutionary that Nissan say it will change the way everyone thinks about a car.

Gone is the oil, the petrol tank, the gearbox, exhaust pipe. There is no need to fill up at a petrol station ever again.

Recharge time is set 30 minutes via a ‘quick charging station' or 6 hours with a 220 volt current. The engine is an 80 kilowatt design which translates to 107 horsepower. Top speed is rated to 90 miles per hour.

Research has shown that the car has a range of 73 miles with an energy consumption of 34 kWh per 100 miles. Experts have rated it as ‘combined fuel economy at 99 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent.' There is a good wikipedia page on the project which you can read here.

Nissan are in the process of organising a ‘LEAF city tour' – giving potential customers the chance to get a hands on experience with the car. To get more information on the City Tour dates you can visit their FaceBook site.

  1. Thank god Apple didnt make it or the battery would be inaccessible :p

  2. Performance is never a concern with these cars, its like driving a hairdryer. wonder what the speed is though, probably limited to 40ish.

  3. The speed is 90 mph (it stated in the text between the pictures)

the interesting thing to me is that with electrical motors the highest torque is immediately available, so max acceleration (not speed) is immediately available… 😀
probably this is fun to drive…

  4. I’ve seen a few auto bloggers as well as some periodicals that report very good things about the driveability of the Leaf. Long gone have been the facts that electric cars are slow. One needs to look no further than cars like these and home built versions to realize that electric cars can be not only fast but fun.
