Intel claims Arc graphics cards will rival Nvidia GPUs in ray tracing performance

Intel has made some bold claims regarding the performance of its upcoming Arc Alchemist GPUs. As per the company, the upcoming A700 series will be on par with the Nvidia RTX 30 series in terms of ray tracing performance, with the A770 being, on average, 14% faster than the RTX 3060 in 1080p with RT ON.

Based on Intel's own tests, the A770 is faster than the RTX 3060 at 1080p gaming with ray tracing across many games. In games such as Fortnite, Metro Exodus, Arcadegeddon, and F1 2021, the Intel card soars above its rival. However, there are also some outliers where the Nvidia card is faster, including Guardians of the Galaxy, Battlefield V and F1 2022.

These numbers look impressive, considering this is Intel's first generation of graphics cards with ray tracing hardware. This is achieved through a component in the GPU known as a Thread Sorting Unit. This component helps implement Asynchronous Ray Tracing by dealing with ray divergence and combining rays with similar hit shaders to ensure Xe-cores are fully used.

In addition to these tests, Intel shared the 1440p gaming with ray tracing and XeSS (Balanced and Performance). In the best scenario (Ghostwire Tokyo), we see FPS improving by 77%, but on average, using the preset will present you with a 47% performance increase. As for XeSS Performance, performance may improve by as much as 113% in Ghostwire Tokyo, but the average FPS improvement is a more modest 74%.
