Nvidia has reportedly told board partners about plans to phase out the RTX 3060, currently the most popular GPU amongst Steam users, according to the monthly Steam Hardware Survey.
The reports were first shared on the Board Channels forum (via VideoCardz). Even if the RTX 3060 series is officially discontinued, Nvidia will honour existing orders and work through partners to ensure a steady distribution to retailers. Consequently, the market repercussions of this move may not be felt immediately but over several months.
The GeForce RTX 3060, launched in February 2021, quickly gained popularity among gamers. The Steam Hardware Survey makes that popularity obvious, as the GPU is the most popular graphics card with a 5.88% share.
The first version of this graphics card to be released was equipped with 12GB of VRAM, which allows it to deal well enough with some high-VRAM-usage games. Interestingly, Nvidia subsequently introduced the 8GB variant of the RTX 3060 at a reduced price. While rumours suggest that both versions of the RTX 3060 may be headed for retirement, the fate of other RTX 30 models remains uncertain.
