Gigabyte R9 290X OC WindForce Review (1600p, Ultra HD 4K)

Rating: 9.0.

AMD fans may have had to wait several months for custom cooled R9 290/x cards to hit the channel, but today we follow up on our December review of the Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X OC with a look at the latest Gigabyte R9 290X OC solution, featuring their excellent triple fan WindForce cooler.

Today we supplement our tests by analysing performance at 3840×2160 (4k HD) on the Asus PQ321QE. We recently acquired one of these screens for high end graphics card reviews. Sure, the £2999.99 asking price will mean very few can afford the upgrade right now, but in the next year we expect the cost to drop.

Setting up this monitor is simple with both AMD and Nvidia hardware (via DisplayPort cable) and we didn’t experience any issues. To achieve a refresh rate of 60hz after the Forceware or Catalyst drivers were installed we enable the Multi Stream Transport mode within a submenu of the Asus PQ321QE.

On paper there is no doubt that the R9 290X is a monster, clocked at 1GHZ. The Gigabyte R9 290X OC is clocked higher, to 1,040mhz out of the box, although the memory speeds are set at reference – 1,250mhz (5.2Gbps effective).

The Hawaii GPU is built on the 28nm process and the card comprises 6.2 billion transistors. The R9 290X has 64 ROP’s, 176 TMU’s and 2,816 unifed shaders. The 4GB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1,250mhz (5Gbps effective) and is connected via an ultra wide 512 bit memory interface. We have tested the reference card when it launched and while we were impressed – the cooling solution was woefully inadequate.

The R9 290X, along with the R7 260X features a programmable audio pipeline. The R9 270X and R9 280X don’t. This new TrueAudio technology is designed for game audio artists and engineers, so they can ‘bring their artistic vision beyond sound production into the realm of sound processing’. This technology is intended to transform game audio as programmable shaders transformed graphics in the following ways:

  • Programmable audio pipeline grants artistic freedom to game audio engineers for sound processing.
  • Easy to access through popular audio libraries used by top game developers.
  • Fundamentally redefines the nature of a modern PC graphics card.
  • Spatialization, reverb, mastering limiters and simultaneous voices are only the beginning.

Gigabyte box artwork is certainly distinctive, featuring a neon style outline of an eye. Our review sample didn't include any accessories, with only the card itself inside the box.
ACC_5001_DxOACC_5005_DxO
The WindForce cooler is a three fan design, set inside a black metal shroud. The PCB is also black. This is a dual slot card and due to the metal construction it feels heavy in the hand.
ACC_5010_DxO
The card has a DVI-I, DVI-D, full sized HDMI and DisplayPort connectors.

R9 Series graphics cards can now support up to three HDMI/DVI displays for use with AMD Eyefinity technology. A set of displays which support identical timings is required to enable this feature. The display clocks and timing for this feature are configured at boot time.

As such, display hot‐plugging is not supported for the third HDMI/DVI connection. A reboot is required to enable three HDMI/DVI displays.
ACC_5006_DxO
The Gigabyte R9 290X OC Windforce takes power from an 8 pin and a 6 pin power connector. This is identical to the reference design.
ACC_5008_DxO
There is no Crossfire connector on the R9 290X. The 290X and 290 offer Bridgeless Crossfire capabilities.

Above, the card disassembled. It is a substantial cooler – there are six direct touch copper heatpipes, five of which run the full length of the cooler.

An overview of the Gigabyte R9 290X OC WindForce. The Hawaii CPU is built on the 28nm process and has 24 ROPS, 176 Texture units, and 2816 Stream processors. The 4GB of GDDR5 memory is connected via a wide 512 bit memory interface. Gigabyte have not overclocked the memory, although the core receives a modest boost from 1,000mhz to 1,040mhz.
On this page we present some super high resolution images of the product taken with the 24.5MP Nikon D3X camera and 24-70mm ED lens. The tests were performed in a controlled air conditioned room with temperatures maintained at a constant 24c – a comfortable environment for the majority of people reading this.Idle temperatures were measured after sitting at the desktop for 30 minutes.Load measurements were acquired by playing Crysis Warhead for 30 minutes and measuring the peak temperature. We also have included Furmark results, recording maximum temperatures throughout a 30 minute stress test. All fan settings were left on automatic.

The Gigabyte BIOS is set up to hold a maximum temperature 10c below the AMD reference card, at 85c (AMD reference board is 95c). The maximum fan speed on the Gigabyte R9 290X OC Windforce is set to 56%. We didn't notice any thermal throttling during our testing, which is good to see.

By comparison, Sapphire have opted for a more aggressive default fan profile on their R9 290X Tri-X OC, holding a maximum temperature of 68c when gaming.
We have built a system inside a Lian Li chassis with no case fans and have used a fanless cooler on our CPU. The motherboard is also passively cooled. This gives us a build with almost completely passive cooling and it means we can measure noise of just the graphics card inside the system when we run looped 3dMark tests.

We measure from a distance of around 1 meter from the closed chassis and 4 foot from the ground to mirror a real world situation. Ambient noise in the room measures close to the limits of our sound meter at 28dBa.

Why do this? Well this means we can eliminate secondary noise pollution in the test room and concentrate on only the video card. It also brings us slightly closer to industry standards, such as DIN 45635.

KitGuru noise guide

10dBA – Normal Breathing/Rustling Leaves
20-25dBA – Whisper
30dBA – High Quality Computer fan

noise
The Gigabyte R9 290X OC Windforce is very quiet, due to the non aggressive fan profile that Gigabyte have set up. All three fans only spin around 2,200 rpm when under gaming load. The Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X OC Edition may hold a lower temperature, around 68c under load, but the noise levels are higher.
To test power consumption today we are using a Keithley Integra unit and we measure power consumption from the VGA card inputs, not the system wide drain. We measure results while gaming in Crysis Warhead and the synthetic stress test Furmark and record both results.
power consumption
Power consumption falls in line with the Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X OC edition, around 235 watts when gaming.
To overclock today, we used the dedicated overclocking tools within the latest version of AMD’s Catalyst Control Center.
overclocking

ccc-oc
We managed to overclock the Gigabyte R9 290X OC Windforce from 1,040mhz to 1,134mhz by increasing the power limit settings to 26%. Our screenshot shows a fan speed increase to a maximum of 70%, but the Windforce cooler is good enough to ensure it won't throttle, even at the default 56% setting.

In the last couple of months we have tested some of the finest graphics cards ever in our labs, such as the Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X OC and the Palit GTX780 Ti JetStream. The Gigabyte R9 290X OC WindForce ranks with them due to a combination of frame rate performance and whisper quiet cooling.

When we compare directly to the Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X OC it gets very interesting. Sapphire have opted for a more aggressive fan profile, holding gaming load temperatures at 68c. Thanks to their triple fan solution the noise levels are never that intrusive, although it is noticeable.

Gigabyte have clearly configured their R9 290X OC Windforce solution to emit as little noise as possible while maintaining a decent thermal curve under load. The default settings maintain a temperature of 85c while holding a maximum 56 percent fan speed.

Noise levels are extremely impressive indeed, however load temperatures might seem a little high for some readers. Rest assured it is easy enough to reduce the thermal peak by increasing fan speeds to 70 percent – without encountering any thermal throttling. Noise levels rise to around the same as the Sapphire R9 290X Trix-X OC, but the temperature will hold at 75c, 10c lower than the default BIOS setting. The option to tweak this from the default ‘quiet' profile is handy, and we would assume that many enthusiast users will deal with a little more noise for reduced temperatures.

Both Sapphire and Gigabyte have addressed the concerns we had with the reference AMD R9 290X back in October. Noise levels are reduced, cooling performance is improved and most importantly, the core is no longer throttling due to an inadequate cooler design.

As we mentioned in the Sapphire review a short while ago, without thermal throttling, the R9 290X performs at a very high level. Not quite at the same level at the new GTX780 Ti, but you will save around £120. Again, we need to stress that if you are gaming with a single 1080p panel this card is simply overkill … we recommend you look at the R9 280X instead.

Overclockers UK have the Gigabyte R9 290X OC Windforce listed at £479.99 inc vat, on pre-order with stocks due to arrive on the 17th of January. This card offers incredible performance and has a little extra headroom if you need to squeeze every frame rate of performance at ultra resolutions.

The default fan profile is not aggressive, but by simply tweaking the fan speed from 56% to 70% you can easily drop load temperatures from 85c to 75c without throttling. Noise levels may rise a little but the Windforce cooler flexibility should prove tempting for the discerning high end enthusiast audience.

Pros:

  • very low noise.
  • no core throttling.
  • £120 less than the GTX780Ti.
  • additional overclocking headroom available.

Cons:

  • GTX 780Ti still holds the performance throne.
  • stiff competition from the Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X OC Edition.
  • no memory overclock.

Kitguru says: A mighty challenger for Sapphire. The Gigabyte card is quieter out of the box, but runs a little hotter.

  1. Terrible Terrance

Well about time there were a few more cards out. this one looks good, bit expensive, but all these cards are. Have you reviewed their 290? can you mod it to 290x? :p

  2. Gigabyte cards get overlooked quite often, but its good to see the partners have taken their time to get them out at a high level, its the reason why a lot of people didn’t buy the reference 290. shoddy cooler.

  3. Thats a great card, id love a review of the 290 myself, 290x is too much for me. Are you going to review it?

  4. Good review, although I don’t agree, I think the GTX780ti is GREAT value, they start now at £550, and id pay £70 more for one over a 290x.

  5. I hate this site, you do it all the time. review a product WE CAN”T FU*(ING BUY anywhere. its only on preorder on OCUK. whats the point of that? still not out yet, good job AMD. bunch of losers.

  6. Optical Illusion

wish I could afford a 30 inch 4k screen, but its a bit off before they are affordable. 280X is the best bet if you want AMD, but I might move to Nvidia next gen later this year.

  7. To the author of this review: Guru3D also did a review of this card, and the temperatures on Quiet mode was 84C, roughly equal to your results, and Uber’s max temps was at 77C. The noise levels are also a few dB higher on Uber mode. Could you verify that you actually recorded the temps in Uber mode?

  8. Hi Hmmm,
Sorry – not seen that review
What were the benchmarks when the card was in ‘Uber’?

  9. I had one of these….OCUK had 10 cards in just before Christmas and I managed to snatch one.

I hope other peoples experiences are better than mine…I ran a couple of game benchmarks at out of the box settings but it crashed a couple pf times running metro last light benchmark and would not boot up there after when the amd driver (13.12) was installed….RMA’ed but now waiting for more stock due 17/01.

I’m seriously considering switching my order to a 780ti….its just the promise of what “mantle” and “freesync” may bring is holding me there atm.

  10. Really excited about this card. Was lucky enough to get the 290X BF4 version for ‘only’ 417 euro! (which converts to 346 pound).
