MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8G Review

Rating: 7.0.

Today we take a look at the third RX 470 card to hit our labs – the MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8G. This card ships with a dual fan custom cooler, as well as enhanced out of the box clock speeds. The talking point? This is the first RX 470 we have looked at which ships with 8GB of GDDR5 memory.

If you followed our launch reviews, you will know that I was quite surprised, and equally disappointed with AMD partner card RX 470 retail pricing. The cards we reviewed were priced only £10 less than the Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ OC 4GB – which made little, if any, sense to me. Sadly prices haven't dropped any over the weekend, but we hope in coming weeks that some deals will appear for RX 470 solutions.

If launch pricing of the 4GB RX 470 cards seemed bizarre, then today takes a turn into the twilight zone. This MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8GB is priced at £229.99 inc vat, which is £30 more expensive than the Sapphire RX480 Nitro+ OC 4GB. Adding 4GB of GDDR5 memory does come at a cost, but I have to admit to more head scratching this week.

On a slightly more positive note at least the MSI RX470 Gaming X 8GB is equipped with a very attractive two tone dual fan cooling system which makes it easily the best looking RX 470 available today.

An overview of the Ellesmere RX 470 in GPUz. AMD’s RX 480 has 2,304 stream processors, the RX 470 has 2,048. Both have 32 ROPS, however the RX470 loses 16 texture units, from 144 on the RX 480 to 128 on the RX 470.

The MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8G is clocked at 1242mhz in Gaming mode, while the GDDR5 memory runs at 1,650mhz. In OC mode the core is tweaked to 1254mhz (6.6Gbps effective) and the memory gets a very minor increase to 1,675mhz (6,7Gbps effective). We always test graphics cards from all the companies in the fastest state, as we would imagine most KitGuru readers will do the same (or even overclock manually to the limit).

There will be no overclocking page in this particular review today, because if we increased core speed at all past the ‘OC' rated speeds in the latest version of MSI Afterburner, our test system would crash.

The MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8G ships in a colourful box with a high resolution image of the product on the front.

The rear of the box goes into more detail on the card specifics including catchy headlines such as ‘Play Hard, Stay Silent'. Yes, we will indeed MSI.

The MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8GB is a very attractive card and features the two red and black tone cooling system we love – there are two custom branded ‘Torx 2.0' fans fitted. Unfortunately it is not all good because MSI have decided not to fit a backplate to the rear of the PCB. It will be interesting to see later with our thermal imaging camera how this will effect the issue of thermal hotspots under heavy load.

L1000712

The card takes power from a single 8 Pin PCI e connector.

L1000713

This card would look so much better with a fancy MSI branded backplate fitted. We understand companies needing to cut costs in the lower end market, but this card is retailing for £230 in the UK, so I find it very disappointing. The £199 Sapphire RX 480 has one fitted for instance.

It is interesting to note that official MSI RX470 Gaming X 8GB product images regarding the LED lighting system on the official MSI website show the card fitted with a backplate HERE. As it stands you will only see some colour through the MSI logo on the side of the card, above.

L1000717

The I/O plate is fitted with a single DVI (Dual Link) connector, two HDMI (2.0) connectors, and two DisplayPort (1.4) connectors.

The MSI Twin Frozr IV cooler is substantial, featuring several thick heatpipes, which run into densely packed racks of aluminum fins on either side of the cooling block.

I have spent the last month benchmarking a selection of AMD and NVIDIA cards with the latest drivers on one of our new 6700k test beds. We are using the AMD Crimson Edition Display Driver, Version 16.8.1 and Nvidia ForceWare 368.81 driver.

We list each resolution test for every game on its own page – meaning if you are just interested in 1440p resolutions for instance, you can skip the other resolutions without effort. If you want to read the whole review and find all the page changes annoying – click on our menu system top right of these pages, and head to ’30. view all pages’.

We are aware the RX 470 is not designed for Ultra HD 4k gaming, but we include the results out of interest – comparing against 4GB versions of the same hardware when more texture memory is advantageous. There seems little point for an 8GB RX470 in the grand scheme of things however including some tests seems the best road to test.

We are using a custom Titan Bayonet system supplied by Overclockers UK as the basis of our test system today. Read more on this system over HERE.

Dirt Rally is developed by British video game developer Codemasters using the in house Ego engine. Development began with a small team of individuals following the release of their 2012 video game Dirt: Showdown. Codemasters have emphasised a desire to create a simulation with Dirt Rally. They started by prototyping a handling model and creating tracks based on map data. The game employs a different physics model from previous titles, rebuilt from the ground up.

We have built a system inside a Lian Li chassis with no case fans and have used a fanless cooler on our CPU. The motherboard is also passively cooled. This gives us a build with almost completely passive cooling and it means we can measure noise of just the graphics card inside the system when we run looped 3dMark tests.

We measure from a distance of around 1 meter from the closed chassis and 4 foot from the ground to mirror a real world situation. Ambient noise in the room measures close to the limits of our sound meter at 28dBa. Why do this? Well this means we can eliminate secondary noise pollution in the test room and concentrate on only the video card. It also brings us slightly closer to industry standards, such as DIN 45635.

The MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8G is very quiet and the fans never spin that high (around 600 rpm during Tomb Raider testing). At idle and under low load situations, both fans disable. We recorded no coil whine either, which is good to note.

The tests were performed in a controlled air conditioned room with temperatures maintained at a constant 21c – a comfortable environment for the majority of people reading this. Idle temperatures were measured after sitting at the desktop for 30 minutes. Load measurements were acquired by playing Rise Of The Tomb Raider for 90 minutes and measuring the peak temperature. We also have included Furmark results, recording maximum temperatures throughout a 10 minute stress test. All fan settings were left on automatic.

MSI have opted for a less aggressive profile and temperatures peak around 71c when under the synthetic duress of the FurMark stress test. When gaming the card holds the temperature steady at 65c.

The fans only spin between 800 and 900 rpm under this synthetic load!

thermals

Without a backplate we measured some very high temperatures on the rear of the PCB, close to 100c. MSI take note.

We measure power consumption from the whole system when idle and when gaming, excluding the monitor. We play Rise Of the Tomb Raider and measure demand.

power

Power consumption from the system showed around 235 watts, very similar against the Nvidia GTX 970.

The MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8G is a very attractive looking graphics card that targets the mainstream enthusiast gaming audience. We have said it many times in the past, but we do believe that MSI make the best looking graphics cards on the market.

MSI have approached the design of the RX 470 with a focus on low noise performance, and they have suceeded. The RX 470 Gaming X 8G is actually one of the quietest graphics cards we have tested. The large slow spinning fans never exceed 600 rpm when gaming, and they hit around 840 rpm when stressed with the synthetic Furmark test.

Unfortunately for MSI this causes a few issues. Firstly, they cut corners (and costs) by excluding the installation of a backplate. Without a backplate fitted, our thermal imaging camera recorded hotspots close to 100c under load. The Sapphire RX 470 Nitro+ OC by comparison recorded 50.2C at the hottest point on the backplate – around 50c cooler!

We didn't include an overclocking page in this review because we couldn't simply get the MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8G overclocked at all without running into artifacting and instability problems. The ‘OC' software profile is the highest stable clock speed we could get, so we aren't sure if this is related to some kind of system glitch, or a more serious issue – as we only have one sample to test.

Right now my biggest issue with the MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8G, or in fact any 8GB RX 470 is the pricing. This card is £30 more expensive than the Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ OC 4GB, which retails for £199.99 inc vat on Overclockers UK HERE. Overclockers UK told us that they are selling out of the Sapphire cards as they get them in and are currently awaiting more stock. At £200 it is the best gaming card on the market right now.

If AMD had forced partners to simply release 4GB RX 470's and 8GB RX 480's then the market would make a lot more sense right now. As it stands we have RX 470's more expensive than faster RX 480's and what makes it worse is that incorporating 8GB of GDDR5 memory on a RX 470 is utterly pointless.

Pros:

  • looks fantastic.
  • dual fan cooler works well.
  • no coil whine.
  • quiet.

Cons:

  • no backplate.
  • 8GB of memory is pointless on a RX 470.
  • PCB runs close to 100c under load.
  • £30 more expensive than some 4GB RX480 models available today.

Kitguru says: The MSI RX 470 Gaming X 8G is a great looking graphics card, that delivers solid performance. Unfortunately at £30 more than 4GB RX480 cards available on the market it is very badly priced. There is no need for 8GB of GDDR5 memory on a lower level RX470 either, because the GPU is long out of horsepower before the extra texture memory would be required.

  1. I want to see an RX 480 XFire and MultiGPU review… Even an RX470 XFire review would be great… Zen should make it go fast…

I think you absolutely hit the nail on the head, rx470 4gb, and rx480 8gb as the only choices would have made the whole thing better and clearer for everyone. Even their own sales!

  4. 8gb pointless on a 470
    wow thats just so wrong
several games already take more than 4gb.
    what’s pointless is 4gb on a 480

this is not about games, rx470 have weak muscles to carry out 8gb

  6. “this is not about games”? What do you mean with that?

You essentially always pay for GPU power. A 8GB 470 might have too much VRAM, which is useless as worstcase, yet a 4GB 480 will have unspent GPU power when you have to reduce the textures cuz of VRAM. Increasing texture quality is only limited by VRAM and has no effect on the GPU-limited framerate.
A surplus on VRAM is always better than a surplus of GPU power.

  7. Does anybody knows if this card really support 5 independent screens at once?
    Thanx in advance

  8. RX470 is actually have same design like RX480. I’ve the Sapphire Nitro RX470 8GB OC with default clock @1260 MHz that reach 5.1 TeraFlops which is same like the stock reference RX480.
